What Does it Mean to Clear and Grub Land

Depending on the size of the land and what the land has on it this can be easy or very hard. If you plan on clearing a forested portion of your backyard you will likely need a lot of equipment. Taking a tree down is not a matter of chopping it down like a lumberjack. You can damage your home, shed car or even yourself by trying to cut a whole tree down at once. The process is slow and you have likely seen it down by a team of professionals on your street. After a bad storm, many trees on residential streets need to be taken down. The way it is done is procedural. You remove all lower branches, then remove upper branches. Start with the smaller thinner branches and keep removing until the tree is “naked” that is there is nothing but the trunk and no branches or leaves left on it. You will now have to go up on a ladder and tie branches to a structure so you can see them off without it falling and hitting the ground or breaking during cutting. This can cause you to fall and hurt yourself badly. You will want to be harnessed for this as well. You will need either a structure or a heavy device like an excavator or bulldozer to get rid of the stump as you will not be able to pull it out with your car as they do in the movies. Stumps are deep in the ground and must be dug and removed whole or they may start growing back under your brand new foundation. This is why clearing and grubbing are done. It’s not just so you can grade and dig the land easily, it is to prevent plants from growing in the ground under your foundation. Plant mater grows slowly and is very strong and tenacious. Over time it can penetrate your foundation and damage its structure causing drainage issues and flooding. Cracks in the foundation are almost always caused by improper clearing grubbing and grading.

If you have purchased an empty lot with a lot of detritus and plant life then you may want to call a professional. Professionals will have all the tools necessary. If you try it on your own you must do very good research. If you get to an impasse where you are missing a specific tool or lack the specific knowledge then the entire process will come tumbling to the ground like a house of cards.
